Saturday at 11:50 in the morning there is a new moon, which means Saturday night there is nothing up there at all.
No crescent, no glow on the driveway, nothing to point at. People will still go out and stand in the yard and look.
A sign has never needed anything in the sky to do its work.

You Are Not Making the Number Up. It Is Just Not Addressed to Him.
The most reported sign in the country is four digits on a lock screen. Eleven eleven. People see it twice a day, in the morning and at night, and some weeks it finds them every single time.
And then for a month, it does not happen once, and nobody ever asks about that part.
There is a name for the mechanism and the name is only thirty years old. In 1994 a man named Terry Mullen wrote in to a newspaper in Minnesota about hearing the same obscure phrase twice in a day. The letter is how the thing got named.
In 2005 a Stanford linguist gave it the better name, frequency illusion, and listed the two parts that make it run. Selective attention, which decides what you see. Confirmation bias, which decides what you keep.
Which is a clinical way of saying the number shows up when it has been made important.
Here is where most write ups stop, and it is the wrong place to stop. The mechanism is not an argument against the sign. The mechanism is the sign, and it is pointing somewhere nobody looks.
Something in you assigned that number a job. The practical read is not the number. It is this:
• What you were thinking about in the two seconds before you looked down.
• Where you were standing, and whether you were alone.
• Whether you reached for the phone or it was already in your hand.
• What you did in the next ten minutes, and who it involved.
• Whether you told anybody, and which person you picked to tell.
• How you felt about an hour later, when it had worn off.
Run that for a week and the number stops being a message from somewhere. It turns into a log of where your attention goes when nobody is watching it.
It is not nonsense. It is not proof about him. It is a receipt, printed by your own head, for something it decided mattered.
Which matters this month in particular. If he surfaces and the clock does something strange that week, the two things will arrive together and feel like one thing. They are not one thing, and the question is still what he says about the months he was gone.
The number was never telling you where he is, it was telling you where you have been keeping yourself.

From the Ancients
Chinese pictured an old man who sits under the moon with a book of marriages and a bag of red cord. Yue Lao ties one end to each of two ankles, and the story says the cord can stretch all the way across a country, or tangle, but it does not break. The part worth noticing is that it is tied before either person is born, and nobody gets to see it. There was never anything to check.

What were you thinking about in the two seconds before the last time you looked at the clock?
Today’s Devotion: Tonight at 11:11, if you are awake and you catch it, say out loud the name of whatever was in your head one second earlier. Then put the phone on the dresser and leave the room.
