You can usually tell inside the first twenty minutes, and it is not whether you like him.
It is whether there is an opening. A thing he is bad at, a thing he has not dealt with, a job sitting there with nobody in it.
You never decide to apply, you have already started by the time you notice.

You Were Not Insufficient. You Were Indispensable, Which Is Worse.
Noticing the deficit fast is a skill, and skills come from practice. A lot of people who have it learned it early, in a house where somebody needed watching and the watching fell to whoever was youngest and paying attention. It got rewarded then, and it works.
A role is safer than being wanted for nothing in particular.
That is the whole engine. Being chosen can be taken back at any time without warning. Being needed cannot, as long as the need holds.
So the work starts, and it does not look like work from the inside. It looks like love, because it is done with love and at enormous cost.
From the outside it is countable, and the ledger is one sided every time:
| • |
You found the doctor, made the call, and drove him there. |
| • |
You rewrote the email he was going to send to his boss. |
| • |
You remembered his mother’s birthday two years running. |
| • |
You explained him to his own friends when he was short with them. |
| • |
You learned the names of everyone at his job. |
| • |
He knows one thing about your work, and it is the title. |
Here is the part that makes it a trap instead of a bad habit. Every time the work lands and he gets better, the job gets smaller. The thing holding the two of you together is the job.
Which means the system keeps the men who stay in need and loses the ones who stop needing.
It also explains the ending that so many women describe and nobody can account for. A man gets better, and the getting better is the last thing that happens before he goes.
That is not him being cruel, most of the time. The repairs finished, and the job was the whole relationship, so when the job ended there was nothing left holding it up.
You were not insufficient. You were not too much. You were load bearing, and nobody tells a wall it is pretty.
If he surfaces this month improved, the question is not whether he is better. Plenty of them are. The question is whether anything in him holds weight when you are not under it, and whether he can name what the last stretch cost you without being told.
There is one account in your life that has never had a single hour of that work put into it.

Also True
From the Ancients
Greek had a word for the account you never work on. Philautia, self love, and Aristotle spent a chapter of the Ethics defending it. His distinction is not the one people expect. The bad self lover is the one who assigns himself the money and the honours. The good one assigns himself the hard noble work, on his own account, in his own name. Aristotle adds that the bad kind is far more common, and he was not counting women who do the hard work on somebody else’s books.
