You wake at the same time again, and the room is lighter than it should be.

The moon is filling toward Saturday, and this week it is still up in the middle of the night. It comes through the blinds and lands on the wall in stripes.
It is 3:12 tonight, and it was 3:08 the night before.

You Are Not Waking Up Because of Him. You Are Waking Up Because of the Hour.
The hour is not personal. Cortisol sits at its lowest around midnight and starts climbing again around two or three. Sleep gets lighter as the night goes on, and dreaming comes more often in the last stretch of it.
Core temperature bottoms out around four or five. For anyone who goes to bed between ten and midnight, the lightest sleep of the night lands almost exactly where the clock keeps finding you.
Half your street is closest to the surface at the same hour you are.
So the waking is not the sign. Everyone wakes. What arrives in the gap before you fall back under is the part worth reading.
The hour has no opinion, but it does have a habit. Here is what it hands people, more or less in this order:
| • |
The sentence you should have said in the car, months ago. |
| • |
The exact tone of one voicemail. |
| • |
A number. What you have, what you owe, what age you will be. |
| • |
A door in a house you have not lived in for years. |
| • |
The name, arriving by itself, with no thought attached to it. |
| • |
The decision you have been not making since summer. |
At that hour the brain has the whole file and none of the tools. The sun is down, the phones are off, and the offices do not open for five hours. Every item shows up without the thing that would settle it.
It is not new. It is not proof. It is the same material handed to you at the one hour of the day when nothing can be done with it.
The list you get at three is a list of what is unfinished, not a list of what is true.
That is the practical read, and it has a use. Whatever the hour hands you, sort it in the morning by one question: does this have a daytime action attached to it, yes or no.
The other rule is about sending. Nothing sent between three and five has ever improved anyone’s position. The hour has no daylight in it and no witnesses, and it will make a reply feel like an emergency when it is a Tuesday.
It runs the other way too. If a man surfaces at that hour, the hour is the information. Reaching for you when nobody is awake to see it costs him nothing.
If he comes back, it gets said in daylight first, with a day and a time in it.
The hour will come again tonight, and the only part you get to choose is what you leave out for it to find.

From the Ancients

Chinese medicine drew a clock with organs on it instead of numbers. Each two hour block belongs to one of them. One to three goes to the liver, and that is where the system filed anger. Three to five goes to the lungs, and the lungs are where it filed grief. Nobody there was measuring hormones. They asked enough people what time they woke, and what they woke up holding.

If you wrote down the first name that arrives tonight at three, whose would it be on most of the pages?

Today’s Devotion: Put a pen and a piece of paper on the nightstand before you get in bed. If the hour comes, write down the time and the one thing it handed you, then put the pen back down and do not pick up the phone.
