There is a word going around that somebody made up by deleting two letters.
Nonchalance, minus the non. Chalance. It means the opposite: showing a person you want them, out loud, on purpose, where they can see it.
It is not in the dictionary, and it is in every glossary of the year.

You Were Not Too Much. You Were Following Advice That Was Already Wrong.
It started with a post in September of 2025 from somebody tired of the whole temperature of it, asking why nothing is allowed to be eccentric or enthusiastic anymore. It spread, and then it stopped being a joke. Hinge reported that searches for chalant were up two hundred and seventeen percent by the end of that year.
Somebody had to invent a word for a man who answers his phone.
That is the part worth sitting with. The bar did not get raised. A word got invented for where the bar used to be, and people are describing it like a luxury item.
Here is what the articles list as evidence of it, and read the list slowly:
• He plans something, ahead of time, with a day and a place in it.
• He asks you a question and then listens to the answer.
• He tells you he is glad about something good that happened to you.
• He says what he wants out of it, in words, early.
• He texts back the same day, without a performance about it.
• He remembers the thing you told him once.
None of that is romance. That is a coworker you like. The fact that it now reads as devotion is the whole news story.
Cosmopolitan put it at number one, ahead of ghostlighting and monkey barring and the rest of the glossary. The list of names we invented this year for ways of leaving is longer than the list for ways of staying.
And here is the part the feed gets wrong. Chalance is being sold as a way to get someone, and it is not that. It does not pull a distant man closer, and nothing does.
It is a filter, and a filter works by losing you people faster.
You were not too much. You were not badly timed. You were doing the one thing that sorts people, in a decade that taught you to be ashamed of it.
If somebody surfaces this weekend, and the calendar says plenty will, the word does not help you. What helps is the same thing it always was. Does he plan a day, does he name what he wants, and does he say anything about the months he was gone.
Nobody needs a new word for that. What they need is somebody willing to be the first one to go visible, and to let the ones who flinch go.
You have been doing the thing the whole internet just voted for, and you have been apologizing for it the entire time.

From the Ancients
Korean has a word for the thing chalance is reaching for, and it is much older than any glossary. Jeong is the attachment that builds between people through ordinary time, and it gets shown rather than held back: feeding somebody, fussing over them, being in their business out loud. There is even a named version for the bond that builds with a person you cannot stand, from years of friction. Nobody there treats showing it as a risk.

What was the last sentence you deleted from a text before you sent it?
Today’s Devotion: Tonight, say the plain thing out loud to one person who is already in your life, with no softener on the front and no joke on the end. One sentence, then go wash the dishes.
