Ask a woman what she loves about him, and listen for the tense.
Some of it will sit in the past. He was different in February. The rest will sit in a tense English has no clean name for, the one where a thing has not happened yet and is somehow already his.
Almost none of it will be about last Tuesday.

You Are Not Wrong About Who He Could Be. You Are Dating the Draft.
Potential is the only version of a person that never disappoints. It cannot run late, it cannot forget your sister’s name, it cannot leave a message sitting on read for a day and a half. None of that has happened to it yet.
A man you have not met cannot let you down, and the one in your head is the one you have not met.
This is why the same man keeps turning up at a different table. Not the same face, not the same job, not even the same town, but the same gap between what he is and what he is about to be.
The loop has a shape, and the shape can be checked on paper. Here is what it looks like from the inside:
The future gets described in detail. Last weekend does not.
The good stretch sits in the past, ran short, and has become the measure for everything since.
The friends met a different man than the one in the telling, so they stop getting the updates.
He gets explained more often than he gets talked about.
There is a turning point in the story that has not arrived, and the date on it keeps moving.
Anything ordinary he does counts double, because it reads as proof of the other version.
None of that comes from being naive. It comes from being unusually good at people. The same skill that lets a woman see what a man could become is the skill that leaves her the last one still standing there waiting for it.
The gift and the trap run on the same wiring.
A man’s intentions do not sign a lease. A man’s potential does not drive anybody to the airport at six in the morning. A man’s future self is not in the room on a Sunday afternoon in October.
Potential is a forecast, and forecasts cost nothing to make.
So the test is not whether he could. Nearly anyone could, on paper, on a good week. The test is a calendar, and whether the last ninety days hold one thing he did without being asked twice.
The trap was never that you keep meeting men with potential; it is that the potential is the part you keep volunteering to build.

From the Ancients
Japanese keeps a word for the moment you meet someone and sense that love is on its way: koi no yokan, the premonition of love. Notice what it declines to claim. It reports on what is going to happen inside the person feeling it, never on what the other one is going to do, and the language does not let those two trade places.
The Mirror
Scroll back ninety days in your phone. What is the last thing he did for you that you did not have to ask for?
Today’s Devotion: Take one sheet of paper tonight and draw a line down the middle. On the left, what he has done. On the right, what he has said he will do.
