Today is a federal holiday, and it is the last long weekend before the run.
From here to the first of January there are four dates that ask the same question out loud. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve. Nineteen days to the first one.
Nobody is going to ask you until it is too late to answer well.

An Empty November Is Not a Verdict. It Is an Unfilled Form.
Venus is in week two of six, still backward, still in Scorpio until the twenty fifth. The moon is filling back up from Saturday, all the way to the Hunter’s Moon on the twenty sixth. On the twenty fourth Mercury turns backward too, so the back half of the month has both of them going the wrong way.
Which is a long way of saying the sky is telling you to finish things, not to launch them.
The calendar on the refrigerator is more useful this week than any of that, and it is not saying anything mystical. Here is what is in front of you:
• Monday, a federal holiday, and the last long weekend before the stretch.
• All week, Venus still backward, in the second of six weeks.
• All week, the moon filling back up toward the twenty sixth.
• Thursday, two weeks and change out from the thirty first, when plans start locking.
• The weekend, when the costume aisle is already picked over.
• A week from Saturday, Mercury turns backward as well, on the twenty fourth.
Here is what happens to a woman who is waiting, every year, on exactly this schedule. She does not fill the dates, because filling them feels like a decision about him. Then the dates fill themselves with other people’s plans, and she attends.
It happens without a decision anywhere in it. Nobody chooses a November like that, it just arrives already assigned.
An empty square on a calendar does not stay empty, it just stops being yours.
That is the one thing this week is good for. Not deciding anything about him, because nothing about him gets decided in week two of a retrograde. Putting your own name on four squares before anybody else does.
It is not moving on. It is not a statement. It is a reservation, which is a thing you make months early for a table you might not want by then.
And if he comes back inside the next six weeks, which this month is shaped for, a full calendar is not a wall. It is an answer that already exists before he asks the question.
He can still be fitted into something that already exists. What he cannot do is arrive on the thirtieth and have the thirty first be blank, waiting, with nothing in it but him.
The squares are going to get filled either way, and the only question this week is whose handwriting is in them.

One Sign to Watch
The first cold morning. One day this week or next you will come out to the car and see your own breath, and the handle will be cold enough to notice. People have marked that morning for as long as there have been mornings, and it is the one sign on the calendar you cannot schedule. The practical use is small. Standing there with the keys, note the first thing your head reaches for. That is what the season is going to be about unless you change it.

What is written in the square for October thirty first right now, in your handwriting?
Today’s Devotion: Tonight, open the calendar and put one thing in the square for Halloween, with a person’s name attached to it. Send that person the message before you put the phone down.
